Basil Haymann has never been one to let an opportunity pass him by. In 2003, he saw the opportunity to stay ahead in the digital revolution and formed D4D Technologies. Already a successful "serial" entrepreneur, Haymann realized there was a need for a significant competitor in the oncemonopolized CAD CAM dental market. Enter teammates Mark and Henley Quadling, identical twins and computer science geniuses from South Africa. Haymann had heard about the Quadlings and what they knew they could do to revolutionize the dental profession. Taking no heed to opposition, Haymann forged on, investing millions of his hard–earned money into the development of an ensemble of patented technologies that we now call the E4D Dentist System, E4D Studio and E4D Labworks.

Born and raised in South Africa, Basil Haymann lost his father at a young age. He dropped out of high school to form his first company at 18 and sold it six years later. Haymann admits, "The dental profession is one of those specialized markets that provided me with an opportunity to apply the business model I've successfully implemented elsewhere: total vertical integration of all aspects of the business, in this case, hardware and software development, engineering, manufacturing, education, support and marketing." While he had never had a stake in the dental market before, he understood the importance of structuring his business to cater to each and every demand of the customer — in this case, dental professionals. What began as a new venture for Haymann soon became one of the largest aspects of his daily life. "Growing up in South Africa, we were not informed about the importance of maintaining our oral health," he laughs. "I knew that in order to be a credible advocate for this level of technology, I needed to finally put my mouth where my money was!"

After an initial examination, it was revealed that he would need six crowns. Haymann was prepped by family friend Dr. Howard Frysh and Dr. Lida Swann to receive his E4D restorations. "I knew what to expect, but this time it was my own mouth being scanned by this system that I had spent so much time conceptualizing," he said. After a few minutes of scanning, his restorations were designed and milled in his on–site operatory that he had once pored over with engineers to find the perfect shade of "E4D silver" paint to coat the walls.
Dr. Swann then fired the restorations and carefully seated Haymann's new teeth. Without a hitch, each restoration was successfully placed. "It's one thing to talk the talk," he explains, post–novocaine, "but it's quite another to truly walk the walk."

Now, with its third year of sales and production fast approaching, D4D Technologies has no end in sight in its quest to continuously improve the quality of care that dental professionals can offer to their patients. Already this year, it has introduced two additional products in its successful E4D line to launch the highly anticipated E4D Sky™: Dentistry's Destination. D4D now offers a full line of CAD CAM solutions for dentists and laboratories: E4D Dentist™ for chairside scanning (intraoral, impressions or models), E4D Labworks™ for benchtop scanning (impressions and models) and E4D Studio™ — a remote design center for either system. All E4D systems will be able to utilize the E4D Sky™ Network to communicate and send data between systems (dentists and laboratories) in order to complete the digital workflow.
Much like the patients of today Haymann is never standing still and always moving. "We are very excited about dentistry's destination and how E4D can continue to innovate to pave the way for the future," said Haymann.
